Traveling Safely in Thailand and Cambodia: What You Should Know in 2025

Last updated: 26 July 2025

Are you planning a trip to the temples of Cambodia or the beaches of Thailand? You’re not alone! Millions of tourists travel to these wonderful countries every year, and most trips are trouble-free. But like anywhere else, it’s important to be ready.

Here’s a summary of the latest travel advice so you know safe and enjoy your trip.

Bangkok

Is It Safe to Travel to Thailand?

In short: Yes, in general. Thailand is an incredibly popular and generally safe travel destination, especially in the major tourist centres like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket island and Koh Samui. However, there are risks and warnings to be aware of in certain areas.

Main Safety Issues in Thailand

  • Political Situation: Political protests can occur in Bangkok and other cities. It would be smart to avoid any protests or large groups of people gathering.
  • Crime: Petty theft and drink spiking can occur in busy tourist locations. Always be aware of your belongings and never leave drinks unattended.
  • “Scams” – Stay on the lookout for scams, such as “gem scams” or friendly tuk-tuk drivers offering “special” tours.

Local Laws (very important!):

  • Lèse-majesté: Criticising the monarchy in Thailand is a serious criminal offense.
  • Vaping/E-Cigarettes: Vaping is illegal in Thailand and can lead to fines or imprisonment for possession.

Health: Use insect repellent to protect against dengue fever, and ensure your vaccinations are up to date on comprehensive travel health insurance.

⚠ “Do Not Travel” Advice – The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and other governments advise against all but essential travel to the southern provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and southern Songkhla due to a long-running conflict. This does not include the main tourist centers.

Uncover Thailand’s top seasons for sun-drenched days, wallet-friendly rates, festive celebrations and unforgettable island-hopping adventures.

Thailand is one of Southeast Asia’s most welcoming destinations, offering warm hospitality and spectacular scenery year-round. If you’re dreaming of sunbathing on pristine beaches, aim for the dry, sunny stretch from November through early April. Beyond perfect weather, visitor numbers and prices shift throughout the year, so timing your trip can make all the difference.

“Thailand enjoys warm temperatures year-round, but the peak dry season from November to March is ideal for exploring most of the country,” notes Emily, Southeast Asia specialist at Absolute Asia Tours. “April brings the highest heat before the rains arrive from May through October.”

Thailand’s three travel seasons are:

  • High (November-March): Cool, dry days-perfect for islands, temples and city tours.
  • Shoulder (April-June & October): Fewer crowds and lower rates, though expect occasional showers and rising temperatures.
  • Low (July-September): Heavy rains make for lush landscapes and great deals, with indoor and off-peak activities aplenty.

Keep in mind Thailand spans over 1,000 miles north to south, so regional variations matter: the Andaman Coast basks in clear skies by November, while the Gulf side may just be entering monsoon. Tailor your dates to the specific regions you plan to visit for the best experience.

Best Times to Visit Thailand for Great Weather

Thailand’s prime window for sun-drenched days runs from November through March (extending into April or May in some regions). During these months, most of the country stays dry with daytime highs in the upper 20s–low 30s °C.

  • Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi): November-February delivers the coolest, clearest conditions-think sapphire seas and lush landscapes.
  • Lower Gulf Islands (Koh Samui, Koh Pha-ngan, Koh Tao): Note that September-December is their rainiest stretch, so plan beach escapes outside these months.

This high season also brings Thailand’s biggest festivals and the Western holiday rush. Arrive in early November to enjoy perfect weather with slightly smaller crowds and better rates.

“Summer travel is possible, but expect brief, heavy showers,” says Emily. “On the Gulf coast, those months can actually be relatively dry.”

Best Times to Visit Thailand for Low Prices

Thailand remains affordable year-round, but July through September – the true monsoon season offers the steepest bargains on flights, hotels and tours.

  • Green Season Perks: The countryside bursts into vivid green, waterfalls roar and popular sites become uncrowded.
  • Rain Patterns: Showers are often short and intense, so you’ll still find dry windows for sightseeing or indoor activities.
  • Crowd Levels: September is the quietest month, while July and August see modest summer tourism and plenty of deals.

If you want a compromise between weather and savings, aim for the shoulder months (April-June and October), when afternoon thunderstorms are brief and rates remain lower than peak season.

Best Times to Experience Thailand’s Festivals

Thailand’s festival calendar is as colorful as it is diverse, celebrating everything from floral beauty to water, lanterns and sacred traditions. Plan your visit around at least one of these signature events:

  • Yi Peng & Loy Krathong (late November) In Chiang Mai, thousands of paper lanterns lift skyward during Yi Peng, while across the country, Loy Krathong sees candle-lit banana-leaf floats drift along waterways. Ticketed Yi Peng launches (around USD 130/SGD 173) let you join the magic firsthand.
  • Chinese New Year (January/February) Bangkok’s Chinatown erupts in dragon dances, drumming processions and vibrant street fairs beneath a canopy of red lanterns and crackling firecrackers.
  • Flower Festival (early February) Over three days in Chiang Mai, elaborate floats adorned with chrysanthemums, damask roses and orchids parade through the Old City, filling the streets with color and fragrance.
  • Songkran (mid-April) Thailand’s New Year becomes the world’s biggest water fight-pour, splash and drench your way through citywide celebrations to cool off during the hottest month.
  • Vegetarian Festival (late September-early October) In southern provinces, devotees observe a nine-day meat-free period honoring the Nine Emperor Gods, marked by colorful processions, fire-walking rituals and temple ceremonies.

Best Times to Visit Thailand for Scuba Diving

Thailand’s vibrant dive sites draw enthusiasts year-round, especially along the Gulf Coast (Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and Koh Samui). For world-class visibility in the Andaman Sea – home to the Similan and Surin Islands-plan your trip between November and April, when calm waters and excellent clarity reveal colorful coral gardens and abundant marine life.

Note: The Similan and Surin Marine National Parks close from mid-May to mid-October for conservation, so book your Andaman dives outside this period. Meanwhile, the Gulf Coast remains largely dive-friendly throughout the year, offering sheltered bays and warm water temperatures even during the monsoon months. Whether you’re chasing whale sharks, reef sharks or vivid nudibranchs, timing your dives to these windows ensures the best underwater experiences.

Best Times to Visit Thailand for Island-Hopping

Island-hopping across Thailand’s limestone outcrops is unforgettable but heavy rains from May to October can disrupt boat services and close some Andaman resorts entirely.

  • Andaman Coast (Phuket, Phi Phi, Ko Lanta): Plan between late October and May for calm seas and reliable ferry schedules. After the southwest monsoon eases in October, you’ll find smooth rides and open accommodations whereas July-September sees limited lodging and choppy waters.
  • Gulf Islands (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Phangan): These islands shine from January through August. Avoid October–December when rains and winds peak, making crossings rough and beach days soggy.
  • Crowd Considerations: June-July draw student travelers from Australia and Europe for their summer breaks, so book early if you want to avoid packed ferries and parties.

Best Times to Visit Thailand for Shopping

Thailand’s markets and malls buzz year-round, but weekend trips to Bangkok or Chiang Mai are essential for bargain-hunting and local crafts.

  • Chatuchak Weekend Market (Bangkok): Open Saturdays and Sundays, 9 AM-6 PM, with covered stalls so you can shop even in rain. Find everything from vintage clothing and designer knock-offs to artisanal homeware.
  • Bangkok Night Markets: Explore Talad Rod Fai or Asiatique after dark for retro collectibles, handmade jewelry and street-food treats under neon lights.
  • Chiang Mai Weekend Streets: Every Saturday night, Wua Lai Road transforms into a vibrant bazaar of silversmiths, woodcarvers and live musicians. On Sundays, Ratchadamnoen Road fills with artisan stalls, local snacks and massage stations-perfect for an evening stroll.

No matter when you visit, dedicating a weekend to these markets will immerse you in Thailand’s rich shopping culture.

You’ll also catch Bangkok at its most festive: November brings the Golden Mount Temple Fair and Loy Krathong lantern release, January welcomes Chinese New Year and February features Makha Bucha ceremonies. In short, this is when Bangkok shines weather and culture-wise.

When to Honeymoon in Bangkok for Perfect Weather

Bangkok makes a memorable honeymoon destination plan your trip between November and March, when the weather is dry, cool and comfortable. This season is ideal for exploring the Grand Palace’s gilded halls, drifting on a luxurious Grand Pearl Dinner Cruise along the Chao Phraya River, and savouring traditional Thai cuisine with live cultural performances.

For a romantic day out, wander Muang Boran (Ancient City), one of the world’s largest open-air museums showcasing Thailand’s historic monuments. And don’t forget to toast your new life together at one of Bangkok’s spectacular rooftop bars-perfect for sunset cocktails and panoramic city views year-round.

Visiting Bangkok for Great Deals

For budget-conscious travellers, Bangkok’s shoulder seasons (March–May and September–October) offer the best value, with hotels and attractions often discounted thanks to lighter crowds. Monsoon rains arrive as short, manageable showers just pack a rain jacket and leave plenty of clear windows to explore Wat Arun’s riverside spires without the crowds.

Off-peak months also showcase Bangkok’s most walkable districts. Meander through Chinatown’s bustling markets and street-food stalls under neon-lit alleys, then find calm in Lumphini Park’s shaded paths. Even high-end malls like Siam Paragon, CentralWorld and Iconsiam reward shoppers with shorter queues and seasonal sales. Visiting during these quieter periods means lower prices, more space and a leisurely pace to discover the city’s highlights.

When to Explore Adventure Activities in Bangkok

For a perfect blend of thrills and comfort, plan your adventure between November and February, when the weather is cool, dry and ideal for outdoor fun. Cycle through hidden sois and bustling markets on a guided bike tour, then paddle across Lumpini Park’s tranquil lake by kayak. Test your strength at Rock Domain Climbing Gym’s indoor walls, or chase an adrenaline rush with cable wakeboarding at Thai Wake Park. After the sun sets, Bangkok’s top nightclubs and rooftop bars offer the perfect finale to your action-packed day.

Best Time to Try Thai Food in Bangkok

Bangkok’s street-food scene dazzles year-round, though April–October’s monsoon showers can slow food crawls. Venture to Chinatown’s Yaowarat Road for essentials: rice and curry at Khao Gaeng Jek Pu, shark-fin soup at Hoo Chalarm, kway chap at Nai Lek Uan and pa tong go at Savoe. Savor pad Thai, som tum, tom yum and golden spring rolls in this energetic food hub. Here’s our checklist for spotting Bangkok’s top eateries.

Best Time to Explore Wildlife and Parks in Bangkok

Although Bangkok has only a handful of wildlife parks, Macaw Land, Tiger Den Safari Park and Safari World (featuring both a Safari Park and Marine Park) deliver unforgettable animal encounters. Plan your visit from November to February, when the cool, dry weather makes outdoor adventures comfortable and wildlife is most active.

Worst Time to Visit Bangkok

June through October marks Bangkok’s peak monsoon season, bringing daily downpours, oppressive humidity and frequent flooding. Outdoor attractions may close, traffic snarls lengthen transit times and standing water increases mosquito-borne disease risk-making sightseeing unpredictable and less enjoyable.

The Mekong Delta, located in the most southern region of Vietnam, is often referred to as the “rice bowl” of the nation. The area is dominated by vast rice paddies and lush mangrove forests lining the Mekong river, which serves as the main artery and a complex system of tributaries. The abundance of canals and waterways enables a leisurely way of following the Mekong Delta’s attractions.

The best hotels in the Mekong Delta are mostly found in Ho Chi Minh City and there are also a handful of luxury properties in Can Tho. With a stay in either city, you will be in good access to convenient and luxurious accommodations for what attractions and activities there is in the delta. If you are planning an experience on a Mekong Cruise or if at a vacation in Vietnam, it is well worth a trip to the Mekong Delta. Consider these fantastic and affordable accommodation options for your travels.

1, The Park Hyatt Saigon

The Park Hyatt Saigon is a beautiful hotel, located in downtown Ho Chi Minh City, which use to be a US military base during either Vietnam War. It offers a spa, beautiful gardens, pool, and has nice rooms, some of which include Bluetooth speakers and have a blend of old-world charm with modern-day comfort! You can experience Vietnamese as well as French-themed cuisine at the Square 1 Restaurant, and enjoy cocktails and light fare at the Opera restaurant. The hotel offers additional dining experiences with a large bar and an extensive wine menu and 2 Lam Son, a hot spot with signature martinis and live music.

2, The Reverie Saigon

The Reverie Saigon sits proudly within Times Square, located in District 1, Saigon’s business and tourist district. The décor is very upscale with a grand entrance with a large couch made in Italy and an emerald green clock that seems to touch the ceiling. The rooms are opulent with imaginative touches, good size beds, and stylish bathroom have interesting touches. The Reverie offers three restaurants with French-Cantonese-Italian cuisines. The exercise centre is lavish and offers-sauna, and a luxurious outdoor pool. The Spa has ten treatment rooms, steam and sauna amenities, and a beauty salon.

3, The Hôtel des Arts Saigon

The Hôtel des Arts Saigon is a trendy boutique hotel with a central location in Ho Chi Minh City that harmonizes contemporary Vietnamese styling with French colonial.view and offerings, world-class dining, and an award-winning spa. It has a rooftop pool, and hip bar. It is a thirty minute drive to the airport, and a few blocks to shops, restaurants and key sites like the Saigon Central Post Office, Reunification Palace, and the War Remnants Museum.
The hotel invites you in through giant wooden doors into a carefully planned lobby that used aspects of Feng Shui with its marble floors, floor-to-ceiling windows, smart lighting, luxurious fabrics, and fresh flowers everywhere. The hotel staff wear traditional Vietnamese attire, and the owner’s interesting collection of art and outstanding antiques is well represented throughout the hotel. The rooms/suites are lightly decorated with French-Indochine flair with rosewood parquet floors and built-in handcrafted dark wood furniture made by local craftsmen in the double bed and very comfortable neutral, toned bed and sofa topers. The interior helps to convey a blend of East and West, with interesting architectural details like the round-edged windows created during a decade of the art-deco era.
In addition to the library, which includes many different pieces of art, you can lounge by the glass-walled saltwater pool on the 24th floor with amazing views of the bounded area and the skyline of the city. Le Spa des Artistes provides Asian and European spa experiences. Saigon Kitchen offers a street food market inspired offering with the lunch buffets containing flavours from western and pan-Asian selections for lunch and an à la carte dinner with a seafood focus on weekend nights. Guests can enjoy Café des Beaux Arts with a grand piano and a wood-paneled Social Club on the 23rd floor, that has a more relaxed vibe than upstairs! Rooftop rustic-style bar serving up a great cocktail experience.

4, Villa Song Saigon

Villa Song Saigon is located on the banks of the Saigon River, in a charming neighborhood of nice villas and homes. In District 2, you’re just a short ride from Ho Chi Minh City itself, but also in an area of calm that feels far removed from the typical noise of suburbia. The hotel is also located in an area with not too many sights, but it does offer a boat shuttle free of charge for guests which takes approximately 15 minutes. A guaranteed prettier experience than the taxi!

There are a lot of hotels to choose from in Ho Chi Minh City, however, on reflection, Villa Song Saigon stands out and quite possibly is the reason for my desire to return one day. A large footprint, large French-colonial style, the long and narrow hotel stretches across the skyline of the Saigon River to surrounding architecture to envy. Villa Song Saigon is a boutique hotel with just 23 rooms but each reflects a sense of old-world colonial charm tastefully expressed through unique design aesthetics. Guests can select entry level hotel rooms such as the Writer’s Room, perfectly suited for a single traveler traveling on a budget or an Imperial Suite with king-sized four-poster bed and two balconies. The rooms are all beautiful with classic wooden floors, and complimentary mini-bar for free.

Guests can breakfast next to the large swimming pool which has shaded sun-lounger pods. Guests should find the pool area an inviting, comfortable feel, especially when entering through the hotel entrance that is covered with vines as a lingering reminder that you are in the tropics. Other expensive hotels had a small gym just overlooking the pool, however, the spa has a good list of face and body treatments using package specials. At Bistro Song Vie, the hotel’s all-day dining venue, guests will dine in lovely surroundings with tables on the river, palms trees and lawn. Bistro Song Vie offered a predominately Asian menu at lunch and dinner.

5, Victoria Can Tho Resort

The lovely Victoria Can Tho Resort successfully combines luxury and charm attributed to French colonial influences. The hotel’s green space is relatively unique in its character, to complement it with a riverside spa, open-air bar and terrific restaurant serving fabulous food. Guests will have ample opportunity to de-stress, enjoy themselves, and take part of different activities of a memorable experience, such as a chartered cruse aboard a converted rice barge, cooking classes, cycling tours, etc. The resort is an incredible destination in the region, around a 20-minute drive from Can Tho Airport, making perfect it easy to connect Mekong Delta to Hanoi.

6, Azerai Can Tho

Aserai Can Tho is located on an islet along the Hau River – a getaway from the populated cities that create noise and crowded spaces. The amazing Azerai Can Tho retreat beautifully harmonizes with nature with blissful natural lake populated with lotus flowers. There are lush gardens and banyan trees around the lake’s perimeter. Situated directly across the river from Can Tho, guests experience tranquility from the necessary bustle of the more popular Can Tho city. Now a mid-point for two opportunities of exploring both the Mekong region and as a destination to stay in Can Tho with a boat ride to the city of only a couple of minutes. We received bicycles to ride along the flora, colorful and vibrant markets, amazing street food and magnificent pagodas.

The rooms were comfortable and views of lush greens, large bathrooms configured in warm auburn wood complimented sleek slate-grey fabrics depict this modern minimalism.

Days can spent seeking wonders of the delta, or an evening can include only about eating dinner of flame-grilled fish with spiced wagyu beef at the Grill. Alternatively, for those wanting the resort’s offerings who is seeking relaxation and a great time can join tennis on the riverside, tavern cocktails next to the pool, or a soothing hot-stone massage.

Best Times to Visit in Thailand

As Thailand is in the tropics, the weather does not fluctuate as much as in other places with four seasons. Instead, two tropical weather systems bring monsoons, resulting in rainy and cooler dry seasons. Thailand’s temperature ranges from 25-29ºC year-round, except for the northern highlands where winters can be mild. The ideal time to visit Thailand is between November and February when the majority of the nation experiences colder weather, creating a comfortable exploration for tourists. If you are planning to discover the east side of the peninsula, often known as the Gulf of Thailand, the perfect time to experience outdoor activities is from April to September.

In this article, Absolute Asia Tours, which is one of the leading travel agencies in Thailand, is proud to introduce travelers to the best times to visit Thailand based on four tourist’ purposes: great weather, low prices, traditional festivals, and beach activities. Get ready and explore Thailand together!

For the best weather, visit Thailand during the dry season, which lasts from November to February in most parts of the country and sometimes extends into March, April, or May. However, the Lower Gulf, which includes the islands of Ko Samui, Ko Pha-Ngan, and Ko Tao, has the most rain from September to December.

November marks the beginning of winter but don’t be scared. There is no need to huddle up in sweaters or beanies as Thailand is located on the equator, causing a different definition of winter- a season with no heavy rains and no heat. As a result, wintertime is considered to a a perfect time and peak season for tourism with a variety of experiences, including New Year celebrations, water activities, and festivals. February is one of the last months of the peak season. Tourists should consider traveling to the northern reaches of Thailand before the heat kicks off.

Thailand is a reasonably priced destination all year, but tourists may get the best deals on lower hotel rates, easier access to eateries and attractions that are usually crowded with tourists, and maybe a more authentic local experience during the low season, July to September. At this time, the rates are usually lower, creating a calmer and quieter atmosphere in the tourist attractions. However, there are also restrictions. Rainfall might occur in short cloudbursts or spread out over many days, affecting island access and boat operations. Make careful to prepare early if you’re thinking about taking a trip in the summer because there aren’t as many tours available and some hotels even close during the off-season.

In case of visiting Thailand during the low season, Absolute Asia Tours suggests some activities for you: Participating in Phi Ta Khon (Ghost Festival), surfing and island exploring, and East Coast adventures.

  • Yi Peng Lantern Festival and Loy Krathong Lantern Festival: November

Visitors should attend at least one of Thailand’s numerous festivals, which honor everything from fruit and flowers to elephants and monkeys. Two November’s lantern festivals are famous for their size and magnificent scenery: Yi Peng, which is celebrated in Chiang Mai (Northern Thailand), when millions of rice-paper lanterns are released into the sky; and Loy Krathong festival, occurring across the country, when banana-leaf baskets are filled with flowers and blazing candles and released over lakes, rivers, and canals.

  • Lunar New Year in Bangkok’s Chinatown: January or February
  • Flower Festival in Chiang Mai: February

Under the glare of firecrackers and red lanterns, Bangkok’s Chinatown is transformed into a sea of dragons, drummers, worshipers, and tourists during the Lunar New Year in January or February. Chiang Mai’s Flower Festival, which takes place over three days in February, includes a parade of intricately adorned floats.

  • Songkran Festival: April

Following the rice harvest in mid-April, Songkran, also called the Water Splashing Festival, celebrates the Thai New Year nationwide with parades, celebrations, and performances. During Songkran, Thailand becomes “one big water fight,” and it coincides with the hottest time in Thailand. Therefore, getting wet is a perfect experience during scorching weather there.

  • Vegetarian Festival: September or October

The Vegetarian Festival honors the Nine Emperor Gods of Taoism by celebrating a nine-day meat-free fast in late September or early October. Phuket hosts the most well-known celebration.

  • Swimming & Scuba Diving

Thailand’s gorgeous marine parks and well-known underwater destinations attract divers from all over the world. The east coast of Thailand is generally suitable for diving throughout the year. Plan your vacation between November and April, when the waters are calm and visibility is at its best if you intend to dive in the Andaman Sea, such as from the stunning Similan and Surin Islands. Additionally, bear in mind that the marine parks at Similan and Surin are closed from mid-May to mid-October.

  • Island Hopping

Thailand may be explored by boat from one limestone island from a jungle on top to another, although the enjoyment of the water can be affected by seasonal downpours. For the rainy season, several resorts in southern Andaman even close.

While the islands off the east coast, such as Ko Samui, are wonderful to visit in the summer, the islands off the west coast, like Phuket, are best visited in the winter. This implies that you should schedule your tour of the Andaman Isles, including Phuket, the Phi Phi Islands, Ko Lanta, and others, between late October (when the rains start to lessen) and May or June. On the other hand, October through December is when Ko Samui, Ko Tao, and Ko Pha-Ngan, the Gulf of Thailand’s paradise islands, are the wettest and windiest.

Absolute Asia Tours believes that tourists could plan an ideal itinerary full of activities after finishing this article. However, if you are struggling with any details, please contact us for more information. Prepare for a perfect journey with “Best Times to Visit in Thailand”.

As I wandered through the vibrant streets of downtown Bangkok to catch a glimpse of the new Ritz-Carlton, a delightful shift in the atmosphere caught my attention. The breeze picked up, unveiling a tapestry of bright blue skies interspersed with fluffy white clouds. Strolling along the beautifully landscaped paths of the One Bangkok enclave, I was enveloped by a sense of nostalgia. The sophisticated surroundings made me ponder: Was I in New York, Los Angeles, or perhaps London? A familiar comfort wrapped around me.

Stepping inside the hotel, I was welcomed by a cheerful bellman who guided me to the lobby on the seventh floor. As the doors swung open, I was greeted by an exquisite focal point: a tranquil lily pond adorned with delicate glass lilies, set against massive arched windows overlooking the captivating skyline that had just captivated me. This was my first moment of awe.

I had the pleasure of meeting Tina Liu, the hotel’s general manager, who offered intriguing insights into this remarkable property. Soaring 216 meters above the bustling intersection of Wireless and Rama IV roads, the hotel embraces the theme “A Fusion of Two Cultures.” The concept is rooted in a vision from the 1800s, where Thailand sought to harmoniously blend its rich traditions with international influences. From what I experienced, the Ritz-Carlton has successfully captured the essence of Bangkok’s vibrant future.

The stunning architecture of the Ritz-Carlton Bangkok, designed by the renowned Chicago-based firm SOM alongside Thailand’s A49, features ascending open-air terraces that deliver breathtaking views of the city skyline. Inside, the PIA design studio masterfully weaves together elements from the past, present, and future, utilizing endless archways, elegant marble flooring, striking chandeliers, and personal touches that create an inviting, residential ambiance.

The dazzling main pool, accompanied by a children’s pool complete with fun water jets, boasts spectacular vistas of Bangkok’s skyline. Plush pool chairs draped in soft white towels line the path leading to a delightful terrace, the perfect spot for enjoying a refreshing drink while watching the sunset over Lumphini Park’s serene lake. Nestled just behind this terrace is the hotel’s exquisite dining venue, Duet by David Toutain, which boasts two Michelin stars at its Paris counterpart. Here, guests can indulge in modern French cuisine crafted from meticulously sourced ingredients and artisanal products, all served within a stunning glasshouse setting – truly a must-visit dining experience!

The Ritz-Carlton Bangkok features a collection of 260 beautifully appointed rooms, each thoughtfully designed to showcase Thai artistry and contemporary elegance. Every room boasts floor-to-ceiling windows that perfectly frame stunning views of the city. The entry-level Deluxe Room is a generous 50 square meters, providing ample space for relaxation. Tip: About half of these rooms come with balconies that accommodate a table for two, ideal for enjoying fresh air. If you prefer additional indoor space, the non-balcony options offer the same layout but include a window-width daybed, perfect for unwinding in the cool comfort of air conditioning.

For those seeking luxury, the expansive Marigold and Amaranth Suites, each measuring 127 square meters, are adorned with soothing gray tones, rich dark wood furnishings, and multiple seating areas. In one of the corner suites I toured, a large central bathroom features sliding doors that provide seamless access to breathtaking views from the living room, bedroom, and corridors. Many of these suites also boast two private balconies, enhancing the overall experience of opulence and relaxation.

No matter which room you choose, you can expect luxurious touches such as Frette linens and bathrobes – highly praised by my editor-beautifully hand-painted armoires, Diptyque amenities, Dyson hair dryers, and Japanese-style toilets equipped with a digital, detachable remote control. I found myself questioning the need for portability, but I couldn’t help but imagine sneaking the remote to play with the “massage” and “swirl” settings while my husband was in the bathroom, leaving him with quite the surprise!

Before heading down, we explored the exclusive Club Lounge on the 23rd floor. As someone who frequently works remotely, I felt right at home. This inviting retreat features cozy arched alcoves with personal charging stations, along with complimentary bites and drinks served five times daily – all while offering stunning, panoramic views. There’s a unique outdoor table where the previously clear blue skies transformed into a breathtaking canvas of oranges and reds. I believe this spot will undoubtedly become the most coveted location for enjoying breakfast or sipping Champagne at sunset.

For those who share my passion for exceptional dining, the culinary offerings at Lily’s, the all-day dining restaurant (or as Tina prefers to call it, the “main dining room”), are a must-try. The restaurant impresses with uniquely designed spaces, each featuring distinct color palettes, moods, furniture, and lighting. With an impressive array of international cuisine, there’s something to delight every palate.

One standout feature that caught my attention is the stunning floral-shaped waffle maker, meticulously handcrafted by a dedicated Belgian ironsmith who worked closely with the hotel team for months to perfect its design. It’s no surprise that he’s in high demand among some of the world’s most renowned pâtissiers, including Cedric Grolet.

I also had the pleasure of visiting Caleõ, which means “being in love” in Latin-a fitting name, as I quickly fell for its charm. This luxurious bar and lounge dazzles with a magnificent floral chandelier and cozy, semi-hidden rooms adorned in rich blues and golds. The cocktail menu is a celebration of iconic social clubs from around the globe, with inspired drinks reminiscing Miami’s Babylon Club and Rangoon’s Pegu Club. I was particularly fond of the delectable bite-sized snacks, especially the layered potato cubes topped with beef tartare and caviar – an absolute indulgence!

The official opening day for The Ritz-Carlton, Bangkok is set for December 4th, marking its entry into the vibrant scene of contemporary haute luxury alongside a host of new five-star establishments in the city. Guests can look forward to the introduction of a Ritz Kids club and a rejuvenating spa tailored for ultimate relaxation. Personally, I am particularly excited about the creative tours of the One Bangkok Art Loop. Additionally, I plan to join the weekly 6 a.m. runs in Lumpini Park led by the friendly hotel manager, Lewis Quinn-what a fantastic way to start the day!

Spring (late March to mid-April) is popular for seeing cherry blossoms, while autumn (November to early December) offers beautiful fall colors. If you want to avoid crowds, consider visiting during other times of the year.

Japan has four seasons, and the weather varies by region. Summer lasts from June to September, with hot temperatures, often over 31°C (88°F) in Tokyo. Hokkaido, in winter (December to early March), gets a lot of snow, making it perfect for winter sports.

The rainy season runs from mid-June to September, with June being the wettest month. By November, the rains lessen, and December to February is generally dry.

Japan has many amazing sights, including Mount Fuji and the lovely town of Hakone. You can also explore the cultural city of Kanazawa and the historic sites of Hiroshima and Miyajima Island.

Japan’s Weather Guide by Month

Japan is a destination you can enjoy at any time of the year, offering a variety of landscapes and experiences throughout the seasons.

To assist in planning your trip, we’ve compiled a monthly climate guide that details what to expect weather-wise in popular areas. We’ll also highlight seasonal attractions to make your visit memorable.

Top Activities in Japan by Season

Deciding when to visit Japan depends on the activities you want to engage in, the sights you wish to see, and the regions you plan to explore. Seasonal variations play a key role in your decision. To assist you in planning your trip, we’ve put together a list of our favorite activities and the ideal times to enjoy them.

  • March-April – Witness the Beauty of Cherry Blossoms

Visiting Japan from March to April is the perfect opportunity to see the stunning cherry blossoms. This time of year marks the transition from winter to spring, and the sakura blooms can last anywhere from several days to a couple of weeks, depending on the weather. It’s one of the busiest seasons for tourism in Japan.

Keep in mind that the timing of the cherry blossoms varies each year, influenced by temperature and climate conditions. In some years, the flowers might last longer, while in others, strong winds or rain may cause them to fall prematurely.

Typically, the cherry blossoms bloom for about a week in each location, with their appearance staggered across the country. The season begins in Okinawa in early February and moves northward, reaching Hokkaido by late May. For those wanting to experience the blossoms for an extended time, traveling from south to north is a great strategy. Be sure to check out our article for the best spots to see cherry blossoms in Japan.

  • June – September: Immerse Yourself in Festival Culture

The summer months from June to mid-September are the best time to explore Japan’s vibrant festivals and cultural events. Although the humidity can be quite high, this season offers a unique opportunity to experience local traditions while avoiding the larger tourist crowds.

Summer is famous for its lively festivals, known as “matsuri.” Notable events include Kyoto‘s Gion Matsuri, Osaka’s Tenjin Matsuri, Aomori’s Nebuta Matsuri, and the Awa Odori festival in Tokushima on Shikoku Island.

Additionally, this time of year is marked by spectacular fireworks displays, called “hanabi taikai.” While Tokyo’s Sumida River Fireworks are especially popular, countless celebrations take place across the country, showcasing stunning pyrotechnics.

  • November – April: Hit the Slopes for Skiing and Snowboarding

From late December to March, Japan is the prime destination for skiing and snowboarding. January and February are particularly great for experiencing winter festivals, while occasional snowfall may still occur in March and April.

The ski season can extend as late as May in certain regions, but the best times to enjoy the slopes vary depending on your location.

In Hokkaido, snow typically begins to fall around mid-November, with major resorts like Niseko, Rusutsu, and Kiroro often opening their doors by the third week of that month.

March and April are fantastic months for snow sports, both at resorts and in backcountry areas. The abundant early-season snowfall ensures excellent skiing conditions right through to the season’s close, and the clearer weather during this period offers breathtaking views.

  • November-December: Marvel at the Autumn Foliage

The best time to visit Japan to enjoy the stunning autumn colors is from November to December. In Hokkaido, the fall season can start as early as mid-September, while the leaves in Tokyo and Kyoto begin to turn vibrant shades of orange around mid-October.

Visiting Japan during the autumn foliage season is a breathtaking experience, and many consider it one of the top destinations for fall in Asia. Unlike cherry blossoms, the autumn leaves tend to last longer.

By late September, the changing colors start in the northern mountains, gradually spreading south to central cities like Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo by mid-October. The brilliant hues typically remain visible until early December. It’s worth noting that Japan’s autumn displays often peak later than in many other northern regions, with the most stunning views usually found in late November and early December.

Since autumn is one of the busiest travel seasons in Japan, it’s a good idea to plan and book your trip well in advance.

  • December–January: Visit the Snow Monkeys at Jigokudani

If you’re interested in Japan’s unique wildlife, a trip to the Snow Monkey Park during winter is a must. December and January are ideal months to visit Jigokudani and see the Japanese macaques enjoying the warm natural hot springs.

The park is enveloped in steam from the hot springs, earning its name, Jigokudani, which translates to “hell valley.” However, for the monkeys, this place is far from hellish; they find refuge in the soothing waters to stay warm throughout the cold winter.

While these monkeys can be seen year-round, witnessing them surrounded by steam in the hot springs against a backdrop of sparkling white snow is an unforgettable experience.

  • November-February: Winter Activities

The optimal time to visit Japan for viewing Mount Fuji is from late autumn to early spring, specifically between November and February. During this time, the skies are generally clear, providing stunning views of the mountain, especially in the early mornings when the visibility is best.

These months also offer a chance to see lingering autumn leaves or the first signs of cherry blossoms in some areas. Lake Kawaguchi is one of the best spots for taking in the picturesque sight of Mount Fuji.

It’s important to note that from April to August, Mount Fuji is often obscured by clouds and haze, and the start of the typhoon season in September further decreases your chances of seeing it clearly.
