In short: Yes, in general. Thailand is an incredibly popular and generally safe travel destination, especially in the major tourist centres like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket island and Koh Samui. However, there are risks and warnings to be aware of in certain areas.

Main Safety Issues in Thailand

• Political Situation: Political protests can occur in Bangkok and other cities. It would be smart to avoid any protests or large groups of people gathering.
• Crime: Petty theft and drink spiking can occur in busy tourist locations. Always be aware of your belongings and never leave drinks unattended.
• “Scams” – Stay on the lookout for scams, such as “gem scams” or friendly tuk-tuk drivers offering “special” tours.

Local Laws (very important!):

• Lèse-majesté: Criticising the monarchy in Thailand is a serious criminal offense.
• Vaping/E-Cigarettes: Vaping is illegal in Thailand and can lead to fines or imprisonment for possession.

Health: Use insect repellent to protect against dengue fever, and ensure your vaccinations are up to date on comprehensive travel health insurance.

“Do Not Travel” Advice – The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and other governments advise against all but essential travel to the southern provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and southern Songkhla due to a long-running conflict. The hotel is also located in an area with not too many sights, but it does offer a boat shuttle free of charge for guests which takes approximately 15 minutes. A guaranteed prettier experience than the taxi!

There are a lot of hotels to choose from in Ho Chi Minh City, however, on reflection, Villa Song Saigon stands out and quite possibly is the reason for my desire to return one day. A large footprint, large French-colonial style, the long and narrow hotel stretches across the skyline of the Saigon River to surrounding architecture to envy. Villa Song Saigon is a boutique hotel with just 23 rooms but each reflects a sense of old-world colonial charm tastefully expressed through unique design aesthetics. Guests can select entry level hotel rooms such as the Writer’s Room, perfectly suited for a single traveler traveling on a budget or an Imperial Suite with king-sized four-poster bed and two balconies. The rooms are all beautiful with classic wooden floors, and complimentary mini-bar for free.

Guests can breakfast next to the large swimming pool which has shaded sun-lounger pods. Guests should find the pool area an inviting, comfortable feel, especially when entering through the hotel entrance that is covered with vines as a lingering reminder that you are in the tropics. Other expensive hotels had a small gym just overlooking the pool, however, the spa has a good list of face and body treatments using package specials. At Bistro Song Vie, the hotel’s all-day dining venue, guests will dine in lovely surroundings with tables on the river, palms trees and lawn. Bistro Song Vie offered a predominately Asian menu at lunch and dinner.

5, Victoria Can Tho Resort

The lovely Victoria Can Tho Resort successfully combines luxury and charm attributed to French colonial influences. The hotel’s green space is relatively unique in its character, to complement it with a riverside spa, open-air bar and terrific restaurant serving fabulous food. For those seeking luxury, the expansive Marigold and Amaranth Suites, each measuring 127 square meters, are adorned with soothing gray tones, rich dark wood furnishings, and multiple seating areas. In one of the corner suites I toured, a large central bathroom features sliding doors that provide seamless access to breathtaking views from the living room, bedroom, and corridors. Many of these suites also boast two private balconies, enhancing the overall experience of opulence and relaxation.

No matter which room you choose, you can expect luxurious touches such as Frette linens and bathrobes – highly praised by my editor-beautifully hand-painted armoires, Diptyque amenities, Dyson hair dryers, and Japanese-style toilets equipped with a digital, detachable remote control. I found myself questioning the need for portability, but I couldn’t help but imagine sneaking the remote to play with the “massage” and “swirl” settings while my husband was in the bathroom, leaving him with quite the surprise!

Before heading down, we explored the exclusive Club Lounge on the 23rd floor. As someone who frequently works remotely, I felt right at home. This inviting retreat features cozy arched alcoves with personal charging stations, along with complimentary bites and drinks served five times daily – all while offering stunning, panoramic views. There’s a unique outdoor table where the previously clear blue skies transformed into a breathtaking canvas of oranges and reds. I believe this spot will undoubtedly become the most coveted location for enjoying breakfast or sipping Champagne at sunset.

For those who share my passion for exceptional dining, the culinary offerings at Lily’s, the all-day dining restaurant (or as Tina prefers to call it, the “main dining room”), are a must-try. The restaurant impresses with uniquely designed spaces, each featuring distinct color palettes, moods, furniture, and lighting. With an impressive array of international cuisine, there’s something to delight every palate.

One standout feature that caught my attention is the stunning floral-shaped waffle maker, meticulously handcrafted by a dedicated Belgian ironsmith who worked closely with the hotel team for months to perfect its design. It’s no surprise that he’s in high demand among some of the world’s most renowned pâtissiers, including Cedric Grolet.

I also had the pleasure of visiting Caleõ, which means “being in love” in Latin-a fitting name, as I quickly fell for its charm. This luxurious bar and lounge dazzles with a magnificent floral chandelier and cozy, semi-hidden rooms adorned in rich blues and golds. The cocktail menu is a celebration of iconic social clubs from around the globe, with inspired drinks reminiscing Miami’s Babylon Club and Rangoon’s Pegu Club. I was particularly fond of the delectable bite-sized snacks, especially the layered potato cubes topped with beef tartare and caviar – an absolute indulgence!

The official opening day for The Ritz-Carlton, Bangkok is set for December 4th, marking its entry into the vibrant scene of contemporary haute luxury alongside a host of new five-star establishments in the city. Guests can look forward to the introduction of a Ritz Kids club and a rejuvenating spa tailored for ultimate relaxation. Personally, I am particularly excited about the creative tours of the One Bangkok Art Loop. Additionally, I plan to join the weekly 6 a.m. runs in Lumpini Park led by the friendly hotel manager, Lewis Quinn-what a fantastic way to start the day!

• March-April – Witness the Beauty of Cherry Blossoms

Visiting Japan from March to April is the perfect opportunity to see the stunning cherry blossoms. This time of year marks the transition from winter to spring, and the sakura blooms can last anywhere from several days to a couple of weeks, depending on the weather. It’s one of the busiest seasons for tourism in Japan.

Keep in mind that the timing of the cherry blossoms varies each year, influenced by temperature and climate conditions. In some years, the flowers might last longer, while in others, strong winds or rain may cause them to fall prematurely.

Typically, the cherry blossoms bloom for about a week in each location, with their appearance staggered across the country. The season begins in Okinawa in early February and moves northward, reaching Hokkaido by late May. For those wanting to experience the blossoms for an extended time, traveling from south to north is a great strategy. Summer is famous for its lively festivals, known as “matsuri.” Notable events include Kyoto‘s Gion Matsuri, Osaka’s Tenjin Matsuri, Aomori’s Nebuta Matsuri, and the Awa Odori festival in Tokushima on Shikoku Island.

Additionally, this time of year is marked by spectacular fireworks displays, called “hanabi taikai.” While Tokyo’s Sumida River Fireworks are especially popular, countless celebrations take place across the country, showcasing stunning pyrotechnics.

• November – April: Hit the Slopes for Skiing and Snowboarding

From late December to March, Japan is the prime destination for skiing and snowboarding. January and February are particularly great for experiencing winter festivals, while occasional snowfall may still occur in March and April.

In Hokkaido, snow typically begins to fall around mid-November, with major resorts like Niseko, Rusutsu, and Kiroro often opening their doors by the third week of that month.

March and April are fantastic months for snow sports, both at resorts and in backcountry areas. The abundant early-season snowfall ensures excellent skiing conditions right through to the season’s close, and the clearer weather during this period offers breathtaking views.

• November-December: Marvel at the Autumn Foliage

The best time to visit Japan to enjoy the stunning autumn colors is from November to December. In Hokkaido, the fall season can start as early as mid-September, while the leaves in Tokyo and Kyoto begin to turn vibrant shades of orange around mid-October.

Visiting Japan during the autumn foliage season is a breathtaking experience, and many consider it one of the top destinations for fall in Asia. Unlike cherry blossoms, the autumn leaves tend to last longer.

By late September, the changing colors start in the northern mountains, gradually spreading south to central cities like Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo by mid-October. The brilliant hues typically remain visible until early December. It’s worth noting that Japan’s autumn displays often peak later than in many other northern regions, with the most stunning views usually found in late November and early December.

Since autumn is one of the busiest travel seasons in Japan, it’s a good idea to plan and book your trip well in advance.

• December–January: Visit the Snow Monkeys at Jigokudani

If you’re interested in Japan’s unique wildlife, a trip to the Snow Monkey Park during winter is a must. December and January are ideal months to visit Jigokudani and see the Japanese macaques enjoying the warm natural hot springs.

The park is enveloped in steam from the hot springs, earning its name, Jigokudani, which translates to “hell valley.” However, for the monkeys, this place is far from hellish; they find refuge in the soothing waters to stay warm throughout the cold winter.

While these monkeys can be seen year-round, witnessing them surrounded by steam in the hot springs against a backdrop of sparkling white snow is an unforgettable experience.

• November-February: Winter Activities

The optimal time to visit Japan for viewing Mount Fuji is from late autumn to early spring, specifically between November and February. During this time, the skies are generally clear, providing stunning views of the mountain, especially in the early mornings when the visibility is best.

These months also offer a chance to see lingering autumn leaves or the first signs of cherry blossoms in some areas. Lake Kawaguchi is one of the best spots for taking in the picturesque sight of Mount Fuji.

It’s important to note that from April to August, Mount Fuji is often obscured by clouds and haze, and the start of the typhoon season in September further decreases your chances of seeing it clearly.
